#7 Alcohol Ignition Interlocks
This post is following on from our drink driving post (No. #8). If you are convicted of any of the following drink driving offences, Queensland Transport may require you to participate in the alcohol ignition interlock program: -- Driving under the influence of alcohol;
- High range drink driving – (0.15 or higher);
- Dangerous driving while affected by alcohol;
- Failing to provide police with a specimen of breath; and
- 2 or more drink driving offences of any kind within a 5-year period.
An alcohol ignition interlock is a breath test device designed to prevent a vehicle from starting if the driver’s blood alcohol content (BAC) exceeds zero.
The device will need to be fitted to a nominated vehicle for a minimum period of 12 months. It is very expensive, and all up costs about $1600 for 12 months.
Just to recap on what it could cost you – original court-ordered fine (between about $600 to $1200), licence disqualification (typically between 3 and 9 months) and alcohol ignition interlock (say $1600), which is a whopping total approximate cost of between $2200 and $2800.
